b43-phy0 ERROR: FOUND UNSUPPORTED PHY (Analog 5, Type 4, Revision 1) -> Wireless Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4328 802.11a/b/g/n [14e4:4328] (rev 01) not working on dell inspiron e1705 in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

Asked by jody martin

i just downloaded ubuntu 10.4 to my 3 computers, all of which are dual boot. i can't get my two laptops to connect to my home wireless on ubuntu.

i have a dell inspiron running XP/ubuntu with a dell wireless draft 802.11n WLAN mini card and an asus running window 7/ubuntu with an atheros AR9285 wireless network adapter.

Fn F2 doesn't work.

Most of the FAQs and questions refer to system->admin->network, but this isn't an option in 10.4, though ->network tools is, but i don't see anything that would be helpful.

I take it the cards need the ndiswrapper in order to work, but i don't see the requisite stuff for 10.4, just the stuff for previous versions.

fyi: i'm really new to ubuntu, and i have a wep key on the wireless.

internet works from the ethernet, of course. could've sworn the asus picked up the wireless the first time i took it off the ethernet, but it hasn't worked since. the dell never did. both laptops are still picking up wireless running the windows OS.

thanks for any help you can give me.

Hi,

Please first connect the network card of your Dell Inspiron PC to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your Dell's wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu website in Firefox into the Linux Terminal. Do NOT copy-paste from the Email message into the Terminal, as that will only copy PART of the command. The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word restart. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below from Firefox into a Terminal, press <enter>, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!

sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | grep ound; dmesg | grep irmware ; dmesg | grep ipw; dmesg | grep eth; dmesg | grep ath; dmesg | grep b43; dmesg | grep wl; dmesg | grep witch; iwconfig; grep b43 /etc/modprobe.d/*; grep wl /etc/modprobe.d/*; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.

Step 4: Please also specify the exact model and make of your Dell Inspiron PC (if known) on this thread

Step 5: Please create a SEPARATE thread for the ASUS issue using this link:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+addquestion

Regards,

Mark

Hi,

You need to install the following Broadcom driver package using aptitude or Synaptic package manager: bcmwl-kernel-source

This will of course require a working wirED Internet connection in Ubuntu. (wired, not wireless)

For example: using the Terminal, you need to run the following commands to install bcmwl-kernel-source:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install bcmwl-kernel-source

Then reboot and retest wireless using Network Manager.

A similar explanation can be found at the end of this thread:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-docs/+question/89142

If you still encounter wireless issues after installing bcmwl-kernel-source , please try the workaround procedure here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/538617

Regards,

Mark

Mark,

Installed the broadcom driver package using the following commands in terminal:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install bcmwl-kernel-source

Rebooted and the Inspiron is now picking up the wireless. However, the icon still has the red exclamation point warning notification, but everything else appears to work just fine.

I did install the recommended updates that the update manager just asked me to do before I did the broadcom drivers (I just installed ubuntu a few days ago, and I just got prompted to install updates on all of them today). However, apparently there was a issue with "grub," though I don't see any other issues so far.

The ASUS got itself sorted out once I plugged in the LAN cable, and has since been working normally. It's installing updates right now and I just got the same "continue without installing grub?" query. Otherwise, perfecto.

Thanks for your extremely prompt help!
