wlan0: deauthenticating from 00:24:b2:96:49:ae by local choice (reason=3) -> can detect but cannot connect to wireless networks in Ubuntu 10.04
I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS but I'm having problems with the wireless card connecting to wireless networks within Ubuntu. I have installed Ubuntu as a dual boot on my Dell Inspiron 6400 machine and the wireless works fine in Windows XP SP3. I've searched the internet and found that I may need to update the Intel Pro/Wireless 3945ABG drivers in Ubuntu. I've downloaded the drivers but have no idea on how to install them as I am completely new to Linux and Ubuntu. Any help for articles or how a step by step guide would be appreciated.

If the drivers you have downloaded are source code, you can install them with these instructions:
copy the tar.gz or tar.bz2 package into home folder, start the Terminal, and unpack the package by writing this into Terminal:
"tar xvzf package.tar.gz" (or tar xvjf package.tar.bz2) without quotes
Then type this:
"cd name_of_
then this:
"./configure"
then this:
"make"
and in the end type this to install the source package:
"make install"
Have you tried System>

Hi,
Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).
In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:
Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications-
Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https:/
Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!
sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/
Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.
Regards,
Mark

Mario, Thank you for the suggestion. I tried what you suggested but at the ./configure stage it says cannot find file. There are only three files one is the ucode, another is the license file and the last the readme file.
Mark, Thanks for the steps. I've copied the output below.

According to the output you sent, your wireless card is already working correctly (using the iwl3945 driver) and has successfully detected 2 wireless networks.
However, I suspect that your wireless router is misconfigured.....
The output shows the following issues:
wlan0 Scan completed :
Cell 01 - Address: 00:24:B2:96:49:AE
Cell 02 - Address: 00:24:B2:B6:2E:CE
wlan0 IEEE 802.11abg ESSID:"
Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Power Management:off
First of all, the 2 detected wireless routers are transmitting on the same channel (channel 6), which is probably causing wireless interference.
Second issue: your wireless card seems to be trying to connect to a wireless access point with a very complicated name ""f2\x0D\
I suggest following this procedure:
Connect to your wireless router using a wired connection.
Temporarily disable encryption and enable SSID broadcasting. Make sure the access point is NOT hidden. Change the wireless transmission channel to channel 3 to avoid interference. Make sure the SSID broadcast name is a simple name, WITHOUT any special characters in it....
Then retest the wireless connection.
Hope this helps.
If it does not help, then your PC might be experiencing this bug:
https:/
In that case, you should revert to Ubuntu 9.10 (or even Ubuntu 9.04)......

Hi Mark, I tried your suggestions with no luck. I also did a bit of searching and found ndiswrapper. But I've done something to Ubuntu because it would start now! If I try starting in the recovery mode it seems to get to the wireless (Broadcom) and then it just returns IRQ continuously. Would you suggest I reinstall Ubuntu again? Thanks.

Yes, reinstall 10.04 from a LiveCD session. Then try this workaround (as I wrote before):

Thanks Mark Rijckenberg, that solved my question.
