Internet/Wireless related issue

Asked by Gareth Bromage

I am a complete beginner to Ubuntu and Linux and i've run into this problem right at the outset. My desktop PC has both wired and wireless network devices (i am using the wireless one for my internet connection). Ubuntu appears to have installed both devices correctly and I was quickly able to connect to my wireless network, however Firefox would not browse the net.
I have spent a lot of time scouring forums and a lot of the advice appears not to apply to Ubuntu 10.04 although i did find an article that reccomended disabling the wired network device (eth0 which i'm not using) however in system > Administration all I have is "Network Tools" in here I can see both devices in the drop down list but there is DEFINITLEY no option or way to disable either of them.
I have googled this issue to death and i'm still left in the position that my PC will not connect to the internet. Hardware Janitor does not work (gives an error message saying it's missing a component) in windows i would simply disable the hardware in device manager.
I don't want to give up on Ubuntu and linux but i feel like I may well be forced to at this point. Please help

Get connected to the access point usig the wireless. Then run:

gksudo gedit /etc/resolv.conf

empty the file and add these 2 line:

nameserver 8.8.8.8
nameserver 8.8.4.4

Save the new file and close gedit, then try the internet connection. Is it ok?

You might also want to right click the top panel bar and select "Add to Panel", then add the "Nework Monitor". It will show when you are connecting (to wireless and wired connections) and will allow you to check, disable, etc., each connection made as well as find the status when you right-click the app's icon (which shows as an up/down arrow on mine).

Many thanks guys, it's now working. Now it's on with my more ambitious plan to get World of Warcraft working :)

Ok cool but the setting is not permanent. Network manager overwrites the file on boot so you must add the setting in network manager. You must set the ipv4 setting to only use dhcp for address only then set the dns manually.
