Wireless Network controller [0280]: RaLink RT2860 [1814:0781] - [lucid] rt2860 can detect, but frequently fails to connect to mixed mode WPA/WPA2 secured wireless networks - using Asus Eee PC 1000 in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

Asked by Ron Goodman

I have been unable to connect wirelessly since the Update Manager upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 on my Asus Eee PC1000. I have removed and re-added the WLAN connection without sucess. The wired LAN connection seems to be operating normally however. Any advice would be welcome, thanks.

Hello,

I had the same with an Eee PC 1001 and this is down to the Realtek wi-fi driver not being recognized. This can be downloaded from the Realtek website.

My wi-fi did not work with 9.10 or 10.04 until the Linux driver was installed.

Regards,

Allan :)

Hi,

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu website in Firefox into the Linux Terminal. Do NOT copy-paste from the Email message into the Terminal, as that will only copy PART of the command. The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word restart. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below from Firefox into a Terminal, press <enter>, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!

sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | grep ound; dmesg | grep irmware ; dmesg | grep ipw; dmesg | grep eth; dmesg | grep ath; dmesg | grep b43; dmesg | grep wl; dmesg | grep witch; iwconfig; grep b43 /etc/modprobe.d/*; grep wl /etc/modprobe.d/*; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.

Regards,

Mark

Hi Allan

Thanks for the reply, I am fairly new to Linux OS's so am still finding my way around. I did look for RT2860 drivers but the only one I found were at the http://www.ralinktech.com/support.php?s=2. I assume this is the one but have had no success installing yet it but that's likely to be lack of knowledge on my part.

Ron

This issue seems to be linked to the following bugreports:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/496093?comments=all

and

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/545443

I guess this is a serious regression in Ubuntu 10.04 :-(

Please install the following backported wireless drivers (choose the i386 architecture version) :

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/496093/comments/202

Then reboot and retest wireless.

If that does not fix the issue, then install the 2.6.35 rc1 kernel version via this link:

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.35-rc1-lucid/

Again, install the *_all.deb and *_386.deb files in that link.

Then reboot into kernel version 2.6.35 rc1 and retest wireless.

You will need to compile the driver each time you get a new kernel
