Wireless LAN Adapter

Asked by Abraham Arief

Hi I'm new to Ubuntu. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and want to add a wireless LAN adapter to my desktop computer.
I have searched the computer store in my town and I didn't find that one support Linux.
Can you give me solution about the adapter ? Is it must be a PCI one for Linux ?

Thank you

in this case I think you can talk with ur service provider & buy a wireless LAN adapter from them bcos in any case you got the ability to talk with them about wireless LAN adapter. ( If it got any connection problem) I think you can get the warranty 4m ur service provider. It is another advantage. is any LAN socket in ur pc? I think you can use it? I think It is better than using PCI.

But don't buy a adsl usb modem!!! bcos most modems not work properly with ubuntu & sometimes you have to do heavy things to get the connection.

I already have a connection to the internet and connected to the laptop via wireless router. The problem is my desktop computer doesn't have any wireless connection or LAN socket. So I want to add a wireless LAN adapter to connect to the router. So can you suggest me which brand, type for the wireless LAN adapter ?
Thank You

I just tried an experiment with an inexpensive Netgear WG111v3 USB Adapter (a local office store should have one) that was on my wife's Windows XP computer. I started a desktop computer I have with Ubuntu 10.04 and after it had fully booted up, I inserted the USB adapter into an available slot and Ubuntu recognized it right away. I then connected to the SSID of my router and everything's fine.

Perhaps this solution will work for you. Most equipment like this notes that it works with the PC's and Mac's, but no assurance is given for Linux computers at least for now. My suggestion is to try it. Ubuntu may be able to work with it just fine.
