Can't connect to wireless network

Asked by Victoria Hoerth on 2010-05-26

I have ubuntu 9.10 on a dell vostro 1500. When I first installed ubuntu, I had abolutely no problem connecting to my wireless network through a router (Rosewill RNX-N400LX), everything went smooth, and the same everytime I connect to other networks. After I moved, I had my internet service transferred to my new home, and ever since I cannot connect to my wireless network. I can still see it in the NetworkManager, and it does request my password, but nothing happens when I enter it, just keeps on loading eternally and requesting the password again and again (and YES, I'm 110% sure i'm entering the correct password). I have no problem if a connect with the ethernet though (that's what I'm using right now). Nothing has changed in my system, only the regular updates.
I tried a lot of things, following help guides.
Here are some outputs:

pls run cmd's below in a terminal and copy/paste output here

sudo iwlist wlan0 scan

and

sudo dhclient

Hi Peter,

Thanks a lot for your help. Yesterday I removed the security passphrase from my network, and voila! I was finally able to connect. But I when I put it back, the same happens. It's the same password I was using before, and had no issues with ubuntu validating it. The only thing I can think of is that maybe there is an update causing all this ...
Anyway, I did run the commands you told me. Here's the outputs:

Victoria, I see nothing wrong in the output; it appears that that your wlan0 is connected to one of the 4 access points in the vicinity (.....'bound to 192.168.1.102 -- renewal in 407691 seconds'...... )

just a small tip, pls go the wifi applet on the title bar, right, on the desktop, right click on it and select edit connections option.

on the window that opens go to wireless tab, choose add or edit as the case may be and enter the ap essid that you'd like to use and then choose wireless security; now, here pls pay special attention to the type of key that that particular ap uses and enter it; this step is critical, it has to match the ap encryption type and value/string otherwise the connection is refused.

another reason that a connection is/may be refused is that in spite of the encryption key being correctly entered, the ap admin may have enabled the mac filtering option on the router - in this case, if your pc mac wireless address which is 00:1f:3c:1a:4d:ca is not part of that particular ap allowed mac filter list there is zero chance that you'll be able to connect. pls check these points with the router/ap's admins, or maybe you're one of the admin.

I could see that there are 2 ap's - ESSID:"2WIRE891" and ESSID:"Rosewill-N400LX" that do not have any keys set, there is nothing wrong to add these ap's essid's to your connections with no keys and see how things go; you can v easily delete them after checking your connection. mind you, they may have mac filtering lists set.

Hi Peter,

Luckilly my problem is now solved ... I did check on everything you told me. For some reason my previous WPA mixed wireless security is not working any longer. I read some other ubuntu users were having the same issues, and solved changing the settings ... so I did the same, and it is now working.
Thanks a lot for all your time and help!

Thanks peter b, that solved my question.
