Wireless is disabled

Asked by Vic on 2010-05-14

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 in my New Dell Studio laptop with i5 processor. i dont why it says Wireless is disabled under wireless network. I plugged in a wire and Internet is working fine when wired. There is same key "F2" for wireless+Bluetooth on/off. when i hit this key twice Bluetooth goes off/on but no changes in wireless status. its still disabled.
Can someone please help? It would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu website in Firefox into the Linux Terminal. Do NOT copy-paste from the Email message into the Terminal, as that will only copy PART of the command. The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word restart. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below from Firefox into a Terminal, press <enter>, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!

sudo lshw -C network; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | grep ound; dmesg | grep eth; dmesg | grep ath; dmesg | grep b43; dmesg | grep wl; dmesg | grep witch; iwconfig; grep b43 /etc/modprobe.d/*; grep wl /etc/modprobe.d/*; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.

Step 4: Please also specify the exact model and make of your PC (if known) on this thread

Regards,

Mark

I have exactly the same problem on my Dell Studio 17 laptop. I performed the commands that Mark suggested, and this is what I got as output:

sudo lshw -C network; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | grep ound; dmesg | grep eth; dmesg | grep ath; dmesg | grep b43; dmesg | grep wl; dmesg | grep witch; iwconfig; grep b43 /etc/modprobe.d/*; grep wl /etc/modprobe.d/*; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

@Steve: All ubuntu wants you to do is to install the driver for your wireless network card.
Step1: you can locate which card you are using by typing "lspci -vvnn | grep 14e4" at Accessories>Terminal.
It will show you something like this..
     The example:
   03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4322 802.11a/b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller [14e4:432b] (rev 01)
Step2: once you find identified your network card, type this into the terminal, "sudo aptitude update"
Step3: Now type "sudo aptitude install bcmwl-kernel-source"
Step4: Now goto System>administrator>hardware drivers, Select your wireless driver from there and activate it.
Step5: Restart your laptop,
Step6: select your network and you're done!

solved.

Reinhold (dzrox) said : #6

I tried Mark Rijckenberg's solution with no success.

I copied the terminal response and will paste it below. The computer is a Dell Latitude, D810 with an Intel Pentium M processor, 1 gig of memory.

I also verified the drivers for both of the WiFe devices that I use. When I was using 9.10 on this machine, it never asked for the devices.

Thank you for any help you can provide to me. I really don't want to go back to 9.10. 10.4 works perfectly. That is until I shut it down and starting it the next day.
