Ubuntu 10.04 Lucent/Agere firmware downgrade

Asked by edhlarry

I upgraded to 10.04 but my wireless connection no longer works. "Lucent/Agere firmware doesn't support manual roaming." is the error message. No encryption on my wireless network but SSID is not broadcast. Did a lshw -c network, shows driver version as 0.15 and firmware=9.48. Booted 9.10 from DVD and was able to connect via wireless. Did lshw and firmware version is 8.10. What is fix, downrev driver or firmware? How would I do that?

Tried switching router to WPA-Personal encrypted and broadcast SSID. No change, same error.

I've got the same exact problem. I would love to know the fix, as 10.04 looks and runs great on my Dell Latitude C840. I'll be downgrading to 9.10 (clean install) today.

Exactly the same problem here.

I worked around the problem by changing it to WPA.

@edhlarry, is the access point set to TKIP? I don't think this driver will work with AES.

Sorry, when I said "changing it", I meant changing both the access point and the laptop to work over WPA. It was set to WEP exactly because this one laptop was the only one not to support WPA, but the new firmware added support for it (and broke WEP, ironically).

The root cause of the problem is that the wireless mini-PCI card that is standard on my Toshiba 9100 is too old to support newer wireless encryption standards. I solved the problem by purchasing a USB wireless plugin device that supports the newer standard. The laptop had no problem using the USB device over the internal wireless card. An alternative is to upgrade the mini-PCI card to one with a newer wireless chipset. Or just buy a newer laptop! 8-)

Just wanted to add that the USB wireless device was a Netgear 11-g device that was $5 at Fry's Electronics!
