Ndiswrapper don't recognize GPLUS.INF file

Asked by HKhalid

I have a Dlink G520+ wireless card. It works fine with my XP Pro. My PC has dual boot. Just installed Ubuntu 9.10 last night.

I followed the instructions at /WifiCocs/Wireless Troubleshoot but the system says there is no wireless extensions when I run iwconfig.
When I run the Windows Wireless Install, the application says that I got the wrong file. Btw, I installed the latest ndiswrapper for Ununtu 9.10.

What are my options? I really love the look and speed of Ubuntu on my P3 1GHz Presario!! Of course there are other problems, but if I can connect to the net, then it will be easier to resolve.

Please assist. Please also be reminded that the last time I wrote an application was using Fortran 77 back in 1982. So please bear with me.

Regards,

Dan

Hi! do you have access to a wired network? If that's the case, you could try installing ndisgtk from (Applications->Software center), ndisgtk is a frontend of ndiswrapper that works like magic[1]!)

One thing though, according to the Ubuntu wireless wiki your card should be supported "out of the box", so if you manage to get your hands on a wired connection you could try System->Administration->Hardware drivers and check if there is a linux friendly version of the proprietary driver (ndiswrapper is very stable, but is always better to run 'native' binaries).

Hope it helps!

[1] it gets installed under the system menu (sometimes is hard to find...)

Hi! Thanks for answering.

1. I don't have a wired network. I don't have a LAN Card anyway.

2. I read somewhere that in 9.10, the acx_pci in taken out from the kernek(?). I guess that's why it doesn't work on 'out of the box'. Anyway, I do not know how to search for the file and install it.

3. I did use the ndisgdk to install the ndiswrapper but it says 'wrong file'

I will try again the System->Administration->Hardware Drivers but I believe I had tried that.

Any ideas?

Regards.

Use ndisgtk and it will handle stuff for you, if you run:

sudo apt-get install ndisgtk; gksudo ndisgtk

With a wired connection (or enable the install CD as a repo) you can use that to point to the driver .inf.Make sure you get te driver for the right revision of the device. You will need the inf and the sys file.

Hi again!
I believe your best chances are with ndisgtk try downloading a new version of your drivers from dlinks homepage, and test all of the versions (win98/winme/winxp) in order to see if one of them is detected.

One question raises... how did you install ndisgkt if you can't connect to the internet? perhaps the installed version is not updated, try with this in the console:

dpkg -l | grep ndis

and check the version numbers with this ones:
ndisgtk 0.8.4-1
ndiswrapper-common 1.54-2ubuntu1
ndiswrapper-utils-1.9 1.54-2ubuntu1

PS: I was reading an old wiki... my bad

Hi Guys!

First thing first. I got on the net via my XP. I will shutdown and boot up Ubuntu. That's how I get to download the files. I keep switching back to MS XP when I need to get on the net. I install them by using the command :-

cd ~/Desktop
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Once that's done I got the ndiswrapper. Hope that answers your curiosity.

I will definitely try all your advise and update this thread. It's 2am where I am and will be able to do all that hopefully tomorrow afternoon.

Cheerio!!

Hi Guys!

Been a lazy day today. Anyway, I've tried all that you suggested but it still doesn't work.

Anymore ideas?

By the way, can I try to reinstall Ubuntu all over again? What's your take on that?

Cheerio!!

Hi Guys,

I finally resolved the wireless issue I was facing. It seemed that the inf file was renamed to Oem16.inf.

I managed to search for it after comparing the dates of the SYS & BIN files. I opened up each of the INF files within that year and viola! I found it. Don't know why they (DLink) change it but I'm not going to worry about it. I guess they had their reasons.

I ran ndiswrapper and it just worked!

So, thank you from the bottom of my heart and I'm Ubuntu-ing right now. So, this problem is officially closed!!

Regards,

Dan
