no sound

Asked by Claude on 2007-07-15

I just installed feisty and I can't get any sound from XMMS or from movie player.

Something must not be configured properly,
but what?

Any suggestions?

First i would try reading through:

and following the instructions, these are likely to contain a solution for you.

all I succeded by going to that comprehensive problem solutions page is to mess up and I had to reboot windows and ubuntu as I have a dual boot system. Nothing would restart.
By rebooting ubuntu without downloading the updates I now have sound.
If you ever hear of a fix for that bug let me know, then I will be able to upgrade ubuntu.

can you close off this question for the mean time then? :)

Claude (claudcor56) said : #7

You can close it if you want but my problem is not fixed.
If I download the updates I will have the same problem: no sound.
My problem is not fixed.
Any idea how to fix this bug?

I have found something on answer#6717 which I think should be able to solve my problem.
I have followed the procedure and downloaded the alsa driver 1.0.14rc4 extracted the the information.
I see that it is muted by default.
How do I access the alsa mixer to unmute it ?

I have the same problem with my new Gateway MT6459 laptop. I eagerly followed this thread and tried all the suggestions, but still have no sound. Like Claude, I had sound when I first installed Feisty, but at some point, a recommended update "took away" my sound. I've compiled the Alsa drivers, libs and utils, changed my mixer from OSS to ALSA, but no joy. I did see that there is a known bug with the Stac9250, but my understanding is that this applies to sound input. Although it would be nice to be able to record to my laptop, at this point, I'm just trying to achieve sound playback.
I'll be happy to provide any additional info, but I'm fairly new to Linux and Ubuntu, so I'm not sure what would be helpful.
Thanks in advance for any further help!

One more thing, this is my laptop Gateway mt645.

This is the type of audio card I have.

Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SB450 HDA Audio (rev 01)

I got this info from typing "lspci" in the terminal.
