A problem with volume control of microphone

Hello

I got egoSys julia sound card lately. I use ubuntu Studio and the driver seemed to be automatically loaded since I can watch dvd and get sound perfectly... My problem is that I want to record sound and I can't find how to manage volume of sound recorded. It is very low and I can't change it ... any idea?

I'm not sure I understand your question. You want to control the volume of all speakers together? If thats the question than you have to use the Master volume control.
For more details on how to do that please let us know what application you are using.

Yes I want to control every speaker from one slider, I use the default one the goes with Ubuntu Feisty.
I think it is called Gnome Volume Control

First, you should make sure you are using the right device. From the gnome-volume-control menu you should select
File->Change Device and choose the appropriate one.
After this, go to Edit->Preferences and select the Master track to be visible (should be the first one on the list).
Once the track is visible use it to control the volume of all speakers at once.

I got the right device tjecked and when I look for that Master track, I can't find any, I have narrowed it down to be PCM that affects every speaker, the problem is that I would like the slider in my panel to affect that and not front speaker which it does at the moment.

If I set it to only display PCM it still toggles only front speakers.

I am experiencing the same problem.

I have a Dell Inspiron 9300, which has a "subwoofer" on the bottom of it. The subwoofer is controlled by the Master Mono slider and the Master slider controls the two stereo front speakers.

After displaying the PCM volume slider, I found it controls the overall volume, that is, the volume from both the front speakers and the subwoofer simultaneously.

I believe the original poster was probably looking for a file to edit to switch the functionality of the Main slider and the PCM slider. Ideally for me, this would be a plain-text config file that I could sudo gedit, but if not, so be it.

My reason for wanting to do this is that my laptop has multimedia keys on the front edge, and the volume keys currently control the Main slider (and thus only the front stereo speakers) in the Volume Control.

Alternatively, I assume it's possible to change the functionality of the buttons on the front of the laptop. I'm uncertain of the feasibility/desireability of that particular solution, however. Would this affect functionality in some programs? I'm guessing no, but I have no idea.

If I change to the other device via File->Change Device->SigmaTel STAC9750,51 (OSS Mixer) the sliders no longer have any effect on any volume level of any speaker. The device that affects volume level is Intel ICH6 (Alsa mixer).

After reviewing the linked document, I hesitate to take any of those steps, as the hardware is working correctly, just slightly misconfigured for my particular hardware.

Apologies if this was verbose, and please keep in mind I am not a coder.

I am also having the same problem. When adjusting the "master" volume it only affects the "Front" channel of speakers. Center, Rear, Side, LFE, and all other speaker channels remain the same.

The way the volume should work is that if the "Master" volume is changed, the volume of all channels should be reduce. What's the point of adjusting the volume or really having any sort of volume tied to the volume keys on my keyboard if the LFE, center, rear, and remaining channels are still going to be loud?

The problem does not seem to be hardware related nor does it seem to be a cause for a lack of drivers. It is simply because the "Master" volume is tied ONLY to the Front channel of speakers when there actually should be a seperate setting for Front and the master volume should be completely separate from all other channels (as it is in every other popular OS).
