Toshiba Laptop, Intel ICH7 - Volume too low !

Asked by anirbanjoy

Hi,

I installed Fiesta (Ubuntu 7.04 ) in a Toshiba satellite laptop. from the very begining, the sound is too low.

1. I tried the directions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto . Everything compiled and got installed perfectly. But the sound level is still i the whispering level.
2. I unmuted all the options in alsamixer. nyway, it's not a mute related problem as I can hear it but the volume level is too low. And I can't increase the Master volume in alsamixer. it is unmuted and shwing volume level 00.

These are some command o/p :

from lspci :

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)

from aplay -l :

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC861 Analog [ALC861 Analog]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 6: Si3054 Modem [Si3054 Modem]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Thanks,
Anirban

I forgot to mention another fact : I installed some other packages from Synaptic Package Manager .. but needless to say that didn't solve it either.

Try adding this to your /etc/modprobe.d/options (or alsa-base) file:

options snd-hda-intel model=XXX

With XXX from this list:

3stack 3-jack
3stack-dig 3-jack with SPDIF I/O
6stack-dig 6-jack with SPDIF I/O
auto auto-config reading BIOS (default)

If none of these work, can you paste here the output of an amixer command?
Also, test in System->Preferences->Sound ALL the possible devices.

Thanks a lot ..
Actually in this webpage (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto) . it's written

***********************************************************************************************

Add the following line to the file, replacing '3stack' with your flavor (see below)

options snd-hda-intel model=3stack

************************************************************************************************
So I tried all the other flavours other than 3stack 'coz I am told to replace that !!!

One more question Just for inquisitiveness ... 3stack 3-jack -- what is the meaning of this 3 jack thing .. can u pass on any further reference o this .. does it signify that my sound system is a 2.1 sound system ?

Again thanks,
Anirban

I think it refers to the number of physical jacks you have on your panel. It is not said that 3 jacks = 2.1 as some jacks could be stereo (for instance):

1st jack = stero -> Front speakers
2nd jack = stereo -> Rear speaker
3rd jack = stereo = LFS+center

That would be 5.1

Note, this is just a guess on my part, you should consult the documentation given with your mainboard.

Hi. I have the exact problem as Anirban, with the same sound card but on a NEC desktop computer and have also taken the exact same steps in my attempt to fix this, just as him. Difference is that none of the things in the list helped me (the 3stack etc.)... now what to do? My sound is still at whispering level :(
