'f' like in file

Asked by HOST

I use Ubuntu 7.10 as an OS and, due to my ignorance upon many issues of the system, I have to ask for a specific direction
in order to install, via cd-rom, an executable file that will be the bridge between the computer and the wired router that I will connect to the computer itself or, better, to the computers. Please, don't give directions like 'you have to install .,-., (an
invented example) and go into the directory 9087654 (another invented example) when, guess, the main problem for
computers users might be right that: location... location and what is that for? If you wanna teach, be precise, exhaustive ( I
am teaching you how to teach! :-) and, by the way, wine didn't work out.

The wired router is produce by D-Link and the file is named DWizard100.exe.
When I inserted the cd-rom into the computer I got the notice that no application were suitable for running such a file and,
anyhow, my intuition would address me to solve the problem by pasting a few commands at the terminal... Am I right?
Please give a hand... this is one of the three issues I would like to get managed.

Ignore this CD at all. :-D
Just do it with the browser... f.e. Firefox.
Type
192.168.0.1
in the address-bar... (and enter ;-) )

The default login should be "admin" and the default passwd is an empty one e.g. for D-Link.

Just give it a try.

And by the way... you really should upgrade your Ubuntu-version!!!
The support for 7.10 is going down about by now.

I did:
192.168.0.1 in the address bar, followed by 'enter';
result:
the requested URL could not be retrieved.
I did it again for a few times from the browser 'firefox' and 'epiphany', but no luck, so far.
And, excuse me: why do you call upgrade 'the move' from 7.10 to 8.04.2, when, in my humble opinion, U710 is already
a fantastic OS? Why let it go when it can be maintained?

Because the software is updated to newer versions. They cant keep the versions going forever that would be unworkable there would be too many problems. We are 3 versions later and a lot of new software has been released in this year and a half, open office 3, a new version of gnome and lots more. Please update it may even fix your problem.

Hope that helps

OK... maybe i thought not basically enough though.

For the upgrade: 7.10 will not get any security-updates any more from now on. That should be reason enough. 8.04 is a LTS-version. As LTS it will get updates for 3 years instead of 1½ for the "normal" versions. So you would be bothered to upgrade until April 2011.

For the DLink: Before that browser-thing you have to connect the router and the PC via a lan-cable and turn the router on/plug the power supply in.

Did it?

Can you help with this problem?
