Have you tried running the program alsamixer from the terminal? Maybe one of the channels got muted. If so, you could select it and push the "m" button to unmute it.

Everything seems to be on. I didn't see many channels just caller-id and off-hook. Any other suggestions.

I tried that trouble shooting web site and it didn't help. My sound works if I boot windows.

Massimo Forti I have the same problem with this audio card.

00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03)

Do I need to load the --with-cards=hda-intel module to make this card work? I could just try and possible break things but I thought I should just ask. The better question is where can I go to match this info? So I can l know what to attach for the module when I configure.

I read the INSTALL text file and it gave me the answer on this line. This text file is inside the compressed file alsa-driver-1.0.15.tar.bz2 once you uncompress it you can read it then.

 "* Drivers to Compile
The card drivers to be compiled can be selected via --with-cards option.
Pass the card driver name without "snd-" prefix. To specify
multiple drivers, list names with comma (,).
Passing "all" will compile all possible drivers (and this is the
   default choice)."

I ended up just choosing all like this.

./configure --with-cards=all
