can't setup micro

just setup ubuntu 8.10 on old sony pcg-grx670
no sound capture, no sound from micro.

Hi

Try right click on the speaker icon up by the clock and make sure volume levels are ok and nothing muted in the mic.

Also try searching in the Synaptic Package Manager
System menu on top taskbar - Administrator - Synaptic is near the end

The search button defaults to search from description aswell as file name :)
