Double-click the speaker icon in the Gnome panel, then click Edit->Settings. Then check something like "Headphone jack-sense" and click Close. Another tab will appear, click on the tab and check the "Headphone jack-sense". It should disable speakers when the plugged in headphone jack is detected.

hey Martin i am having the same problem. but a little different. i have a problem with my headphone jack so i need to be able to control the volume and speaker separately. but there seems no "Headphone jack-sense" in preferences. there are "master, pcm, digital, extmic, intmic" i browsed through other devices listed there as well but they do not contain any option like "headphone jack-sense" as well. is it possible control volumes seperately?
this is the device i am using:
HDA Nvidia (Alsa mixer)
here is my audio thing "lspci|grep Audio":
00:10.1 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP51 High Definition Audio (rev a2)

Can you help with this problem?
