Ubuntu 10.10 data, downloads failure, etc.

Asked by Abigail McGinni.

release: 10.10
codename: maverick
distributor_id: Ubuntu
description: Ubuntu 10.10

microphone will not work, but I use it alot. I cannot fetch data, etc to update using Update Manager or Terminal. "Failed to fetch ..." Cannot download stuff made for Ubuntu, even in Ubuntu Software Center. Cant even re-download things that were originally installed when I first got it. Verifications always fail. I even follow advice on here, and it will not work. From what I have seen or heard, Ubuntu is not supposed to do that. I've looked up on the Web ways, and they work for everyone else, but never for me.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

http://www.ubuntu.com/info/release-end-of-life

Please read above sites. Ubuntu 10.10 is no longer supported. The programs and updates, you want, are no longer available. It is time to use a supported version of Ubuntu. If you go to Ubuntu 12.04 or newer, there will be a large difference from 10.10. Check release, End Of Life, 13.04 is no longer supported. If you do not like changes made to Ubuntu 12.04 and later, or you computer doesn't meet system requirements, check out Xubuntu or Lubuntu. I have Xubuntu on older computer and it works fine.

I suggest you clean install with Precise. It is LTS and supported til April 2017.

If your system is a low end system then Lubuntu is great. If you install the pre release of Trusty (Ubuntu 14.04) this is also LTS and uses a lot fewer resources than Ubuntu using Gnome.

Cannot download stuff made for Ubuntu, even in Ubuntu Software Center. This is your statement. The place you are going to, is either moved or gone. I have no idea where it is moved to.

Cant even re-download things that were originally installed when I first got it. Your statement. Again, Gone.

I've looked up on the Web ways, and they work for everyone else, but never for me. If you could talk to the people that have success, they are using a supported version, or they had success was before 10.10 End of Life.

I have 10.10 and 10.04 on computers. There is nothing I can do to update or fix either release. I am on my own. Will remove them, and replace when I get time. I also have a Windows 98 computer, same thing, no support. I have a reason to keep 98, it's on my first computer, which is still going.

To get the best running computer, back up anything that is important from 10.10. Upgrade to supported release, by a Live CD(DVD). To upgrade from 10.10 will be very complicated.

The site above will have all information you need. When it says to use a CD use a DVD instead.
