The comp is a Dell 8400 Dimention Desktop.
Vid Card; nvidia 7800 gtx/with restricted drivers on
Sound card;Creative Soundblaster audigy 2
Monitor;dell 2001fp digital
Intel mobo{ made for Dell}with 2 gig of ram
Western Digital 120 gig hdd
Philips DVD R+-Dual Layer Burner
Generic DVD Rom
330watt PSU

This is a new install 7.10
Had problems with XF-I Fatal1ty sound card{no driver/only 64 bit}so i replaced it with the Audigy 2.
After replacing the sound card and booting up ALSA found the sound card.
The sound/5.1 works great but the ALSA Mixer GUI consol loads onscreen at boot.
I also get the home folder loaded at boot.
Thank you for your help
Greg T.

So, you are saying that when Ubuntu boots, a terminal window displaying the text based alsamixer utility pops up, as well as another window displaying the contents of your home folder?

If the above is accurate, these windows may be set to open at startup automatically in your Sessions settings. You can view these settings by going to System>Preferences>Sessions. If you go to the Session Options tab, clicking "Remember currently running applications" should instruct Ubuntu to startup with only the programs you have running when you clicked the button. You can also look at the other tabs to see if something unwanted is set to start automatically. More information on Sessions can be found at this link: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AddingProgramToSessionStartup?highlight=%28sessions%29

(Note about the link: It looks like that page hasn't been fully updated in a while, so the screenshot is no longer accurate, stuff has been moved around on the Sessions window you will get, etc, but it still has helpful information.)

Thank you soo much.
This solved the problem.
I figured it was some kind of start up manager.
I again thank all the kind people in the linux community for their help
