Every video played is in purple or white color

Asked by Bruce

Hello,

when I open a video (it is not only for specific format, it happens for all videos [avi, mpeg, mov, ...]) in any player (Totem, VLC), I only get purple or white screen. I am not sure if it is not working since the upgrade to 12.04 some months ago or if it is a problem only for some weeks (I don't play videos very often).

Here are the screenshots:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras gnome-mplayer

The same with gnome-mplayer. ubuntu-restricted-extras are already installed.

Hmm, I wanted to try it now and it is working... I don't know what happened meanwhile (perhaps some update?) but after some days it works now.

So the problem still persists but it seems that when I reboot, sometimes it is ok sometimes not. Perhaps it has something to do with my ATI RV620 LE [Radeon HD 3450] card. On older Ubuntu releases I had strange problems that not on every boot the card was correctly initialized and I had to reboot. Every release another kind of problems :) I have no time to dig into it, this card is quite old and I will buy a new one in some months.
