CD's wont play on Ubuntu 11.10

Asked by Norman Lambert on 2012-02-06

Installed Ubuntu 11.10 a couple of days or so ago and everything seems to be working.

Frankly I can't see anything wrong with the Unity desktop.

However, I can't play CD's.

The green light flashes for a few moments then all goes dead.

Banshee doesn't even recognise that a disc is in.

Maybe something rather simple I've left out. Anyone help, please?

BTW, I do seem to have sound as evinced by the testing mechanism.

If you install VLC and run it, have a CD in the tray and click:

File -> play disk

Does it play?

'Fraid not. But not to worry. since I reinstalled (see 187008) all seems to have come right with Banshee.

In fact, all VLC does is to give endless error messages. But thanks for your trouble, anyway
