Asked by Robert Kresge

can't get totem or VLC to play a dvd I rented
Running Ubuntu10.04
Totem does nothing
VLC plays but the picture is all garbled
I've set the region code to 1 then 2 then back to 1 - all have the same results.

Ubuntu cannot ship dvd playback software by default - DVD content is scrambled, so you have to descrable it before viewing. Shipping DVD descramble software with ubuntu is not done for legal reasons.

Additionally - stop changing regions, open source players don't enforce region coding.

After the 5th change your drive will be locked at that region which could become an issue depending on the drive model.
Matshita laptop drives Do enforce region coding, if that's what you have & it gets locked at a region that's different then most of your disc's then you'll be quite out of luck

Can you help with this problem?
