can not play video on movie player

please help. since upgrading from 10.10 to 11.10 i can not play any video file using movie player. i can hear sounds related to the video but can not see anything. the movie player screen is blank or black out. thanks guys

Ok did you install ubuntu-restricted-extras (I assume gnome desktop)

install ubuntu restricted extras and try playing the videos again. alternatively, install VLC from software center and play the files using it. if it goes well then consider that all the required drivers are doing fine. then the problem may be with the codecs.
