cannot see videos on ubuntu 11.10

Whenever i play videos on ubuntu 11.10 i just see black or blue screen in any player but i can hear audio.i have tried mplayer smplayer and vlc player too.i recently made upgrade to 11.10 from 11.04 and 11.04 had no issues regarding this matter.my specs are as follows:
pentium 4 2.4 Ghz,512 MB ram ddr,64 MB built in video chip.
i am using gnome classic on 11.10 and yea i have even tried it on xfce desktop cox i thought may be its a ram problem but no use.

i ll be thankfull for any kind help.i love ubuntu but i miss watching movies on it :(.

Maybe you should try to install the ubuntu restricted extras
type: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
