how do I get my dvd's to play on movie player

when I put in dvd's in my computer which is using ubuntu 11.04
I get the following prompt:
The required software to play this file is not installed. You need to install suitable plugins to play media files. Do you want to search for a plugin that supports the selected file?
the search comes up with nothing
what do I need to install play DvD on movie player or VLC media player?
