dvd drive on my laptop wont mount.

Asked by Micah Smith

I have a HP DV 9620 running release 10.04 (lucid) Kernel Linux 2.6.32-33-generic GNOME 2.30.2. My DVD drive will open and spin disks, but that is all. When I click on cdrom0 in the places menu it tells me "Unable to mount cdrom0" "mount: special device /dev/scd0 does not exist". I run Linux for two reasons, one I like it much more then windows and two my OS HDD lost boot sectors. I have not had use of my DVD drive sense. Are there any "easy" fixes for this or possible ways to identify the root problem? Everything else on my laptop works fine with the exception of it wont boot after shut down from time to time without letting the battery drain completely.

Micah

Can you reboot and insert a CD, wait 10 seconds then run:

sudo lshw -C drive; sudo lshw -C disk; lsb_release -a; dmesg | tail

Thanks

Does the optical drive connect via USB? If so, does it connect to a USB hub?

no. it is an internal drive. it slides in the side of the laptop. it is the one that came with it, and worked for about 3 years without indecent.

If you reboot with a CD in the tray, does it pick up ok? Do you have the latest BIOS?

Have you tried running Natty from a USB stick to see if that makes it work?

Natty is the code name for ubuntu 11.04. Boot to a live USB and see if the optical drive works there
