Videos does not work in Ubuntu Classic 11.04 64bits work with Unity interface

Asked by Anshul Kapoor

I am trying to play any .avi or .mp4, the videos does not come up, however I can listen the sound. When I overlay some other application/applet over movie player it shows playback image, when I return to the application behind(original movie player). The screen remains black. 2nd, If I right click on the playback window, or click on menus at the top, the menus does not show up, rather that particular area where menu's are supposed to appear, shows the video playing.

This works if I switch to Ubuntu (default - that is with unity).

Run;

sudo apt-get -y install ubuntu-restricted-extras gnome-mplayer vlc; sudo wget --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release -cs).list && sudo apt-get --quiet update && sudo apt-get --yes --quiet --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get --quiet update; sudo apt-get -y install w32codecs

I assume 32bit Gnome desktop

sudo apt-get -y install w64codecs

And you will get the 64bit codecs
