Cannot Play DVD's in Ubuntu 10.04

Asked by Kenny Buraker

I have gone to the Ubuntu community and installed the restricted-extras-package, libdvdread4 is installed and from
terminal I have ran the command : sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh as suggested. However, when I place a dvd in the drive the light blinks for a few seconds and then nothing. I don't even receive an error message.
I am new to Ubuntu and would be very appreciative if someone could solve this issue for me.

sudo wget --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release -cs).list && sudo apt-get --quiet update && sudo apt-get --yes --quiet --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get --quiet update; sudo apt-get -y upgrade

May do it.

I ran the command as suggested, but the results were negative. The drive light starts blinking as soon as the drive door closes and continues for approximately 10 seconds. Then nothing beyond this point. The DVD drive is identified as the following: Model: HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8162B, /dev/srO, Firmware Version: 0015, Location: Port 2 of PATA Host Adapter, Connection: SCSI.

I am hopeful the additional information will be helpful to you. If you require additional information, please let know.

Thanks for your assistance!

Paul,

Thank you for your response. I have tried several DVD's and they play fine on my Vista machine. However, since I discovered Ubuntu, I rarely use the Vista machine.
