Ubuntu 9.04: dvd playback stop after an hour

Asked by Jeramy Skinner

I have G-Streamer, Gxine, and Vlc. I think I have downloaded all of the codecs. I can start a dvd, the picture is good, and the sound is good. About an hour into the movie it stops. The video window shuts off, or freezes picture. I have tried verious things such as skipping to the next chapter, fast forward and so on. I have tried all three of the players. It comes back and says that it cannot read the disk, odd because it reads the first half. I'm running on laptop Dell Latitude D610 with Ubuntu 9.04. Anyone ever run into this?

Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope has been unsupported for about six months now. You should really upgrade to 9.10 (which is supported...but only until tomorrow!), and then from 9.10 to 10.04, which will remain supported for another two years. If you want, you can upgrade from 10.04 to later versions, but that's not necessary.

It's particularly bad to use old versions because for it to be unsupported doesn't just mean that there's no effort to provide assistance in places like https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu -- it also means you're not getting important security (and stability) updates!

Upgrading might well fix your DVD playback problem. There have been many improvements over the years. But if not, please post a reply (at that point you can also edit this question's title so it no longer says 9.04), or, if you prefer, mark this as Solved and post a new question.

Can you help with this problem?
