volume poor on Skype

Asked by rex hamilton boote

Using Skype, i cannot get a reasonable volume level.I have powered desktop speakers, and the Skype checking lady comes over great....My chat back is so quiet, more of a whisper!..i have tried all the usual faders, unmuted all..pushed volume to the top ! still no change. I have also tried the web for help... there are a lot of Ubuntu users out there with a similar problem.
I have used a USB phone..Stand microphone...headset/mic..Funny thing is all the same gear works OK with XP !!! I want to use Ubuntu more, but this puts me off !
Help for a newbie please !

I've never used Skype because I prefer to use free software alternatives, but if your audio works well regularly I would suggest contacting Skype about it directly.

There isn't alot that Ubuntu can do to fix broken closed source software :(

Is it your microphone volume that is too low? Fortunately Skype works fine for me on Ubuntu, but I suggest refering to this page, it may be relevant to your issue.

Have you tried switching on +20dB boost on microphone? It's in Alsa-mixer. Double click your speaker icon and you have the mixer. Go to preferences and click the tab switches. choose +20db mic boost.
Hope this will help.
