I did the command and this is what I got.

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
ubuntu-restricted-extras is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 3 not upgraded.

The dvd still doesn't play. It is a dvd+R, but I don't even see my dvd drive when I click on places. I went to the link and did every thing it said there. I did these commands

sudo apt-get install libdvdread4 and sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
I installed regionset as well.

ok, that's fine. now, you need a player - pls go to same page as mentioned before

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/PlayingDVDs

and go down the page until you see the heading

Etc.

VLC

VLC (formerly the VideoLAN Client) is a kind of Swiss Army knife of media players. It plays any file you can throw at it, audio or video; plays DVD’s and CD’s; boasts a variety of skins; and much more. To install VLC, just install the following package: vlc.

pls notice the very last word

vlc

just click on it; a new window will open and display VLC Media Player and a button on the right side prompts you to Install it ; just press on it - it'll install VLC media player. let adjacent progress bar proceed all the way to the right; be patient.

you can start it by going to Applications-->Sound & Video-->VLC media player ; just click on it.

I installed vlc yesterday and the flash player plugin. I still don't don't see my cd drive in places. I tried to to play the movie with vlc, I went in and clicked on no dvd menus and play and I get this.
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvdsimple:///dev/sr0'. Check the log for details.

I can tell you that VLC on my pc and others work with no problem; I tried it just before posting this - a commercial DVD film purchased at best buy was opened and played right away, sound and video.

maybe your DVD is of a special format/encoding that vlc does not understand. I can tell you that vlc is the most versatile of players - it can basically play anything - well, anything that is within known and large circulation.

Katherine, I'll step aside (I'm not the hottest when it comes to problems playing DVD's) - maybe someone else in the community can shed better light into your problem.

I see in the ubuntu forum that many people have this problem after switching over to ubuntu 10.4. Some have been resolved and I tried to follow the steps that many of them have used and because our systems vary in some ways I can't figure out what to do. A couplehave been solved by adding maverick and I can't figure out what that is or how to do that. It sounds like most of them can't find the dvd drive after the upgrade. I thought lauchpad would be able to help me quicker and faster. I don't know if it matters o not, but the dvd I'm trying to watch is a home movie that was dubbed from a vcr tape.

Thanks,
Peter B. for trying to help me once again, it is very much appreciated,
and/or anyone else who can help me do this.
