My computer freezes when i watch videos and listen to mp3

I recently discovered that my laptop freezes alot when i watch videos and listen to mp3. I use vlc...please help to solve this problem. I use a pentium 4, RAM 256MB, the name of the laptop is Medion MD 5400

with only 256 mb of ram, you probably don't have enough to play vids and mp3s.
are you running ubuntu or lubuntu or xubuntu?

okay. you don't have enough ram to be running ubuntu. for ubuntu. you have to have at least 512 mb.

you either have to
1. get more ram, or
2. use xubuntu, which has lower system requirements
