unable to play dvds

Asked by huw morgan

Running Ubuntu 10.04 which includes movie player. This will not play anything at all. Looked for plugins and came back with nothing. Now it sits there doing nothing. Is there an alternative that works? Note - dvds play fine on - dare I say it - microsoft

All the dvds are totally legit - no pirates.

The software to decode DVDs is restricted by laws in various countries which means Ubuntu cannot ship with that software included by default.
You need to install the relevant software -

Are you install libdvdcss?

This will help you to read DVD and I think necessary to do.

You can take from here:
http://www.videolan.org/developers/libdvdcss.html
or
from here
http://medibuntu.org/

It appears that I have got the libdvdread4 (according to synaptic package manager) but still does not work. I looked at the Medibuntu site for the -css file installation but I could not download. Failed saying the package is virtual - ?

My abilities are extremely basic - any suggestions?

Success at last. I downloaded every plugin I could find - from the ugly, down through bad and well past the unspeakably foul............and then it worked.

Thanks to everyone for your help. Very much appreciated. No doubt I will be howling Help! again before long.
