1.- open the gnome-volume-control
2.- then go to Edit --> Preferences
you'll see among others, one option that says something like "Headphone Jack Sense"
3.- click on the check box to enable it and close the preferences windows
4.- go to Switches tab
5.- check the box of "Headphone Jack Sense"

check if it works, if not, please provide more information about your soundcard, like the output of the command "lspci|grep audio"

hope this helps.

Hello

What is the equivalent of the gnome-volume-control's Headphone Jack Sense in Kubuntu 7.10? KMix is not having any such controls.
I have the problem that though I plug in my headphones, there is no sound in the headphones and the speakers continue to function.

thanks
M

I'm using Ubuntu 7.10 on an IBM ThinkPad R52 and I can only listen to sound through BOTH the speakers and the headphones. If I mute the master as Rahul suggested, no sound is played at all. There is no checkbox that exists for 'Headphone Jack Sense', so what can I do?
