no sound
i cannot get any sound when i put in a cd what do i need to do

Please let us know which CD (eg. movie, audio, mp3)?
Go to Applications -> accesories -> terminal.
Do the following and paste the output for us to further examine the problem. do you hear sound otherwise; I mean if there is no CD inserted?
$lsmod
$lshw
