Can not install gnome-desktop-environment because of missing gnome-keyring-manager dependency.

Asked by Ties Koot

I've installed Hardy on my Eee PC recently, and after running Xfce for a while, I'd like to give GNOME another chance. Upon trying to install gnome-desktop-environment, I run into the following problem:
$ sudo apt-get install gnome-desktop-environment
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  gnome-desktop-environment: Depends: gnome-keyring-manager (>= 2.20.0) but it is not installable
E: Broken packages

$ sudo apt-get install gnome-keyring-manager
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package gnome-keyring-manager is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package gnome-keyring-manager has no installation candidate

You should not be installing 'gnome-desktop-enviroment'. Install 'ubuntu-desktop' instead.

hello

First to install ubuntu desktop you need to enable extra repositories

sudo mousepad /etc/apt/sources.list

delete everything and paste the below

# deb cdrom:[Xubuntu 8.04 _Hardy Heron_ - Alpha i386 (20080222)]/ hardy main restricted
deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy main restricted #Added by software-properties
# See http://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes for how to upgrade to
# newer versions of the distribution.

deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy main restricted
deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy multiverse universe #Added by software-properties

## Major bug fix updates produced after the final release of the
## distribution.
