web cam will not come on after being plugged up

you can use Xsane software
(in case it is not installed try " sudo apt-get install xsane " )
if xsane say that he cannot find correct driver or some think like that please send your log file

You need a programme for your webcam to display an image and the choice of programme depends on which version of Ubuntu you are using.

Not all webcams work in Linux because some manufacturers are very secretive about the components used in the goods they sell.
I can check for you if your webcam will work and which driver it needs. To do that you will have to provide me with the output of one simple command:
Go to Applications, Accessories, Terminal and type:

 lsusb

l = lower case L

Hi: There is a program for a webcam in ubuntu hardy i have recently installed,
go to,

Applications > Add/Remove > Graphics >Camorama Webcam Viewer ( 4 Star Rating )

Check Box > and apply changes, should install and get you up and running,
