DVD Drive does not show up in file system / VLC player / Rhythm Box / etc ...

Asked by runner1956-5150-60

My bios loads my DVD drive with no problem and Ubuntu 16.04 disks utility recognizes my drive as HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH24NSBO but when trying to play DVD's with VLC or music CDs with Rhythm Box I cannot even find the drive. When I search for answers I get led to dvd's not playing but nothing about the system not recognizing the drive itself.

I found one spot that seemed to offer a self mounting solution suggesting that I enter the following in the terminal:

>> sudo mount /dev/sro /mnt

but when I tried that all I got was the response:

>> mount: no medium found on /dev/sro

and that's with a DVD in the drive or not.

So once again, I am totally out of my league when it comes to Linux and even finding answers on my own.

Can you help?

the device is /dev/sr0 not /dev/sro

You don't mount a DVD movies to play them.

Did you use this guide:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/PlayingDVDs

Sorry about the typo , you are right it was /dev/sr0 ... but the DVD drive itself, with a Music CD in it for example, still doesnt show up even in the File Manager . Or even when the drive is empty. Shouldnt it at least be there or mounted and ready to use ;?
As I have said before, i am very illiterate when it comes to computers and Ubuntu is my way of escaping the Windows thing. Sorry if I am asking questions most of you already know the answers to.

and yes I did follow the link:

>>> https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/PlayingDVDs

and did the install and dpkg-reconfigure libdvd-pkg and rebooted, but still nada ... should I try to see if it's a region thing? seems like the only thing I can find that might work WHEN i get the system to identify the DVD drive itself.

thank you so much for the input on the not needing to mount the DVD drive itself.

I inserted an old CD into the drive and lo - there it was in the menu bar and I was able to access the region set information.

I am still having difficulty trying to get the drive or VLC , SMPlayer, or any of the other DVD / Media players to recognize my drive

however, with the old CD in the drive I was able to access the Region Set menu. but that seems to have opened a whole new problem - so I am going to search the answered questions for awhile to see if I can find a solution for the 'Region not set' problem that I found.

you guys really are great teachers, you let me find some of the answers myself and point me in the direction of the ones I don't seem to find or recognize as being answers. Look for me to be back ... soon .
