replacement SATA drive not recognized

Asked by JAMES

I am currently working in Ubuntu 12.04. I am going to make a new install of Ubuntu 14.04 because the upgrade failed. I am going to use one of my old hard drives, but the hard drive is not recognized by the disk utility. The drive is spinning and the connections worked with the drive I removed, but it is not displayed. Nothing I tried allowed the drive to be recognized, read, or reformatted. I need all the help I can get as I do not see anything wrong with the drive and it was working with the previous system. I plugged in an old XP drive that no longer boots and it was recognized and I could read and write to it, but I want a more reliable disk.

What further information is required? I think the only thing I forgot to mention is that it is SATA.

Does it show in BIOS? no.

Does that mean something happened to the drive while it was on the shelf?
