What is the output of :

lsb_release -a; uname -a; apt-cache policy gvfs

Thanks

The desktop is called Gnome as in the little fictional people, not genome.

As you can planly see by my mis-spelling of Gnome I am very much a nube at this, am at bottom of learning curve. so will have to do a bit more research before I have any idea what: lsb_release -a; uname -a; apt-cache policy gvfs, or the output there of is all about. No need to reply if you feel you feel I am too far down the food chain.

Chris
You must open Terminal and copy and paste actionparsnip's command. The way to open Terminal is hold these three keys down at the same time CTRL ALT T. That will bring up a window (Terminal). Copy and paste the command (to prevent errors) into window. Copy the results, and paste back here.

Hello everyone. What are you thinking about checking if user has the correct privileges? In "User and Groups" utility there is a "User Privileges" tab with 'Access external storage devices automatically' option, which should be checked. Chris please check latest messages for example with 'dmesg' command. Find something related to your problem.

One more thing; are you able to mount devices manually with 'mount' command? Have you checked something like 'Removable Drives and Media' ('Storage' tab) for various options such as;

* Mount removable media when inserted
* Mount removable media when hot-plugged

And so on. It was available in GNOME2 so I don't know how to find it in GNOME3 desktop environment, because I'm using Xfce4. One more thing - please check a 'gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.desktop.media-handling' command. It should look similar to this:

* org.gnome.desktop.media-handling automount true
* org.gnome.desktop.media-handling automount-open true
* org.gnome.desktop.media-handling autorun-never false

That's my result. If you have 'dconf-tools' package already installed there is available 'dconf-editor' command, which should allow you to check something like: 'org > gnome > desktop > media.handling' for 'automoun' option etc. At last - is there something in '/media/' directory when device is inserted?

Best regards.

Thanks a bunch for putting up with my kinda dumb questions after you
pointed out what to do it seems very obvious and I have resolved the
problem. Just needed a push in the right direction. Once again thanks,
problem solved!
