DiskUtility lists my usb drive but it says no media detected.can't mount it

Hi All...i'm using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. Yesterday my Lenovo R61 was reading my corsair usb drive just fine, but i probably removed it w/out choosing to safely remove it. Either that or the updates that i have been trying to finish on my laptop ,from ubuntu, but either ways, now my laptop refuses to read the usb drive. After several attempts my Disk Utility lists corsair in the peripheral devices but i cannot format it ,not can i choose to safely remove the drive. It says that :"Error detaching: helper exited with exit code 1: Detaching device /dev/sdb
USB device: /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1a.7/usb1/1-3)
Cannot open /dev/sdb: No such device or address".
In File System as well, i cannot see my corsair usb drive listed, not can i see it in mnt.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

What file system does the USB partition use?

When you last unplugged the USB drive did you safely remove it in the OS before physically unplugging it or do you just pull it out?

What is the output of :

lsb_release -a; uname a

Hi..thanks for the reply. I do not know the USB partition file system, and do not know how to check it either.
lsb_release: No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu

Also, when i last unplugged the USB drive, i forgot to safely remove it, and simply pulled it out. Lesson learnt.
One more thing, i tried to plug it in and looked up filesystem again,and though it initially does not list it, after a while it lists the USb drive under Peripheral devices but then again, i cannot safely remove it ,nor can i format it.

If it is NTFS based, try plugging it into a Windows PC then run a full chkdsk and then safe remove it
