GParted says my files are undetectable. How can I back up my hard drive to retrieve later?

Asked by Darryl Cashio

I used GParted live to partition my hard drive and I am running out of space for files. My partition shows up perfectly in system utility but is undetectable using GParted. How can I back up my partion information to retrieve later if I format the disk?
I don't want to lose my files or my bootable disk. Is there any other way to resize my partitions (other than GParted)?
The reason I need to do this is because duplicity from Ubuntu One fails download due to size constraints.

Do you have good backups? If not it is time time to create some. Get a large enough external USB drive and we will advise further.

In the mean time can you give us the output of the following command

sudo fdisk -l;mount | grep ^'/dev'

This tells us what drives you have and how they are mounted.
