accidentally formatted my external hard drive into a guid partition

i accidentally partitioned my xternal hard drive from a fat ( i believe ) to a guid partition. That hd had alot of imp info on it along with irreplacable pictures . Is there any way to get that data back ? I disconnected it as soon as i realized i did it . My laptop is runnung ubuntu 12.04 . , but im about to go back to mac os x with it . Someone please help me !!! Not to mention i'm new to linux hence why im goin back to mac os x . I'd love to get the data back if at all possible . its a seagate go flex 1 tb w/ cc98 firmware .

Why do you not have a backup!? Especially if the data is "irreplacable".....

You may find luck with scalpel or foremost, you can use them on the unmounted partition.

I made good experiences with the tool "recoverjpeg" for recovering pictures. It's more easy to use than foremost and scalpel.
