Partition my Primary Disk

I am new to Ubuntu. I was previously using windows 7 and when i changed to Ubuntu, my partitioned disks are gone. Now i have 316GB in my File System. I want to partition this disk into two Partitions but i don't no how to do it.

I tried to use GParted but couldn't get it to work.

I don't want format my system again. Can some one help me with this? A step by step answer would be appreciated. Thank you in Advance.

you can resize the ubuntu partition in gparted if you boot to live cd. You can then install Windows to the free space. You will need to boot back to the Ubuntu cd after installation as Windows will blindly overwrite your MBR with it's own crippled boot loader and you will need to reinstate Grub.
