Error: mkfs.vfat: failed whilst writing FAT

Asked by Alan Josland

Hi Guys,

I'm trying to format a 1TB hard drive via an external docking station but keep getting the following error:

Error creating file system: helper exited with exit code 1: helper failed with:
mkfs.vfat: failed whilst writing FAT

Any ideas I'm stumped.

Kind regards
Alan

Hi Marcus,

Don't really understand the whilst as I wasn't doing anything else, just formatting the disk.

Kind regards
Alan

Hi Marcus,

Sorry took a while but the penny just dropped.

I was using the application Disk Utility and that's what produced the error. First I formatted the drive which went well and then I wanted to change the file system as it was NTFS and I wanted the FAT file system on the drive. It seemed to get a little way through the process then gave me the above error.

Hope this helps, sorry I didnt understand what you were after.

Kind regards
Alan

Hi,

It was recommended that I use an application called Gparted, and using this seemed to work very well I must say :)

Kind regards
Alan

Hm, in my case Gparted didn't solve the problem, as it produce almost the same error: "mkdosfs: failed whilst writing FAT".
