upgrade 12.10, launcher bar no app tabs

Are you using gnome-panel as the shell?

How can I tell? I am not using the new UI that came with 11 or 12.

gnome-panel is listed in the process table in system monitor, so I think yes

Can you either make a screenshot or find an image online to show the desktop you have please. Use imageshack etc to host

Sure, just use your public folder and get the url for the image

Please use the file in imageshack. There was some problem with Dropbox on the upgrade. Thanks

If you right click the panel, can you add items there? If so, add the 'window picker' (If memory serves) item and it should appear.

There is no response from a right click in the panel.

My laptop upgraded with no problem. Do I need to revert to an older distro?

Then reboot, try both sessions after the reboot

xfce4 was came up with confused screen and would not minimize, and had ubuntu error:

Gnome-classic was same as before (no apps in launcher bar), and had ubuntu error:

Same here with gnome classic or gnome-classic (no effects).
While coming up the app menu line appears briefly at bottom (very quickly vanishes)
then moves to top line leaving the useless white line at bottom that won't show
minimized apps. Minimized apps vanish though (for example a terminal app) the
minimized bash
shells are still running owned by gnome-terminal per ps -eaf , just not usable.
