Nvidia Legacy 4000Mx - desktop effects.. HELP!?!?

Asked by rouge6

Ok, im new to the ubuntu jeist... BUT... I have gathered the knowledge to download Compiz manager.. In which case I have... and the driver is installed..

Yet when I right click on the desktop goto change desktop then goto the visual effects.. and try normal... same thing.. no driver detected... is their a driver that will help me enable them>>> if I download the .run file from nvidia.. despit the fact it's the same version(number) .. would it help... ?? is that driver different from what auto installs when I click activate??

I read it's required to use at least 2048x1024 .. reso.. in which case I can and I am..

I would really like to see these desktop effects everyone is so insanely in love with.

If it was disabled, it wouldn't be seen as far as I know. Ok you are using the proprietary driver which is ok. If you run:

nvidia-settings

Do you get any waring windows?

You can enable that by using an xorg.conf file and enabling coolbits. You can make an xorg.conf file by running:

sudo nvidia-xconfig; gksudo /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Under the line;
Driver "nvidia"

add another line reading:
Option "Coolbits" "1"

Reboot and you should now be able to mess with CPU / RAM speeds as you wish (and potentially fry your card).

Using X configuration file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf".
Backed up file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' as '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup'
New X configuration file written to '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'

/home/adam/.themes/XNTricity/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:71: Murrine configuration option "gradients" is no longer supported and will be ignored.

That's fine, edit the file and reboot

It won't let me open the file so I can edit it... the previous post is all I saw... I did sudo as root and still can't open it

If you are using kubuntu then the command is:

kdesu kate /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Or you can use:

sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

all will give you write access to the file.
