brightness applet does not work GF Go 7400

Asked by Hornett83

Hello there,

I have a Sony Vaio with a Nvidia Go 7400.

When using the NV driver, the brightness applet appears disabled which is fair enough (I assume the support is not available in this driver?).

However, using the NVidia driver, the applet appears enabled (I have the drop down slider) but it does nothing apparent. There is no flickering or display adjustment, neither any error message displayed.

FWIW, the smartdimmer program is able to adjust the brightness with NVidia but garbles the display using NV. Also the brightness adjustment keys on the laptop do nothing using either video driver.

Anyway, my question is this - should I be reporting a bug for a package - if so how do I find out exactly which package has the problem?

I'm running up to date Feisty (kernel is currently 2.6.20-14-generic)

Thanks a lot,
Andy.

I think here you have 2 issues here.

First :
- hardware key not working. Report it in Launchpad. I would guess the package is acpi-support or simply the kernel. Insist on the fact that your are using smartdimmer.

Second :
- gnome brightness-applet doesnt support the smartdimmer method. This is, IMHO, a feature request you have to post upstream on http://bugzilla.gnome.org. Gnome-brightness must be intelligent enough to use smartdimmer or to not enable itself if it cannot do anything.

That's what I would do. It's perhaps not the best way but at least you will, with this method, be in contact with people that care about such issues
