gnome applets deleted in 12.04

Asked by Francisco Barrena

Hi,

Two days ago I started the machine and a message about some applet couldn't be loaded appeared, and it gave two options: Cancel or Delete, I clic on Delete and restarted the machine. Now the gnome applets regarding power switching , user information, date, wireless status, date, etc. do not appear anymore.

Is there a way to restore them without reinstalling the whole system?

Ubuntu version is 12.04. And I am using the Classic interface. No Unity.

I can recall adding and deleting applets in the taskbar was so easy in Ubuntu 10.04. Why Mark, why doing things more complex? We don't like Unity.

Thanks.

Francisco

Maybe reinstalling the *applets packages helps.
sudo apt-get install gnome-applets indicator-applet

In case also reinstall gnome-session, gnome-panel and reboot.

Thanks Sam, I did as you suggested, the install gnome-applets said that they were already installed so it did nothing. The install indicator-applet installed something, but there is still nothing visible.

The instructions to install gnome-session and gnome-panel also said they are at the newest version and nothing happened.

It seems that they are just disabled, there should be a way to enable the applets.

Reinstall the meta package in order to get standard setups.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-desktop

In case verify that network tool and other standard indicators are installed. When they're installed then they're automatically active.

gnome-nettool
indicator-application
indicator-appmenu
indicator-datetime
indicator-messages
indicator-power
indicator-session
indicator-sound

To modify panel applets it needs alt-key and right click.

The alt key was what I was missing.
