Please open a Terminal window (Ctrl+Alt+T or Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and run this command:

lsb_release -a; echo; df -h; echo; groups

Then select all the text in the Terminal (Edit > Select All), copy it to the clipboard (Edit > Copy), and paste it here.

Correction--please run this similar command instead:

lsb_release -a; echo; df -h; echo; groups; echo; ls -l ~/.X*

That will give more information relevant to this problem.

By the way, the best way to run this command is to copy it to the clipboard and paste it into the Terminal. That way, it's fast and easy and no typos are introduced.

Are you still experiencing this problem? If so, please provide the information I requested in post #2 (as numbered at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gksu/+question/165180), or explain whatever difficulties you're experiencing producing that information.

When you try to update in the Update Manager and you cannot, what does happen? Are there error messages?

How are you starting Synaptic?

I failed when trying to open synaptic manager:

Failed to run /usr/sbin/synaptic as user root.

Unable to copy the user's Xauthorization file.

When i try to upgrade to ubuntu 11.10 through update manager, it says:

Failed to run sh /media/cdrom/cdromupgrade as user root.

Unable to copy the user's Xauthorization file.

Do you get the same error if you press Alt+F2 and run the command

gksu xclock

?

No, i can run gksu xclock

I can upgrade to ubuntu 11.10 too through Alt+F2 update-manager -d (not through the left window shortcut app in my desktop)

But why i can't do it through making the ISO as a drive?? it says if i run gksu "sh /media/cdrom/cdromupgrade"

Failed to run sh /media/cdrom/cdromupgrade as user root.
Unable to copy the user's Xauthorization file.
