I was upgrading from 8.04 to 10.04 when my computer froze. Now I can't boot at all. I have files and pictures I would like to retrieve. I can see them using a ubuntu CD but I don't have permissions to copy them. Can somebody help?

When /home/user is 750 (directory) or 640 (files) others aren't allowed to access from LiveCD, so just try 'sudo'.
e.g. open Nautilus via terminal:
gksudo nautilus
Backup important files and try a new installation of 10.04 or 10.10.
